Reproductive Services

The Animal Clinic of Oxford offers a number of reproductive services. We are certified with the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a semen freezing facility, in addition to being a Synbiotics/Zoetis freezing facility. Our clinic has the ability to ship frozen and fresh chilled semen. We perform both transcervical (TCI) and surgical artificial inseminations as well as Caesarian sections. We offer in-house progesterone testing, which allows us to time breeding cycles with more accuracy, as well as brucellosis testing. Through the use of ultrasonography, we can provide early stage pregnancy diagnosis. In later stages, we can use radiographs to determine puppy counts.

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) was founded as a private, not-for-profit foundation in 1966 by John M. Olin, a well-known inventor, industrialist, philanthropist, conservationist, and sportsman.

Olin was an avid sportsman, hunter, and field trial participant. When hip dysplasia began to impact the performance of Olin’s dogs, he organized an initial meeting with representatives of the veterinary community, the Golden Retriever Club of America, and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America to discuss means of limiting the disease. This ultimately led to the formation and incorporation of the OFA. Its initial mission: To provide radiographic evaluation, data management, and genetic counseling for canine hip dysplasia.

While the OFA continues to focus on hip dysplasia, today’s mission, “To improve the health and well-being of companion animals through a reduction in the incidence of genetic disease,” reflects the organization’s expansion into other inherited diseases and other companion animals such as cats.

PennHIP

The PennHIP method is a novel way to assess, measure and interpret hip joint laxity. It consists of three separate radiographs: the distraction view, the compression view and the hip-extended view. The distraction view and compression view are used to obtain accurate and precise measurements of joint laxity and congruity, respectively. The hip-extended view, sometimes called the OFA view, is used to obtain supplementary information regarding the existence of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip joint. The singular, subjectively scored, hip-extended radiograph is the conventional radiographic view used by all hip screening systems globally to evaluate the integrity of the canine hip joint. The PennHIP technique is more accurate than this current standard, and it has been shown to be a better predictor for the onset of OA.
